St Mary's Priory Abergavenny: The Priory Centre

WELCOME to the Tithe Barn, St Mary's Priory, Abergavenny

Usual Opening hours Monday-Saturday 10:00am-2:00pm

Please note: the Tithe Barn is open to visitors and are able to visit Jeremy Thomas' studio when he is at work.  Core hours are 10.00am until 2.00pm.

The Tithe Barn was originally built in the 12th Century to store Tithes – taxes paid to the Priory’s monks by the people living on the monastic estate. Following the dissolution of St Mary’s Priory in 1542, the building was used for many different purposes, including a theatre in the 17th Century and a discotheque in the 20th Century.

The Church took ownership of the Tithe Barn and conservation was undertaken in 2002 to stabilise the building allowing it to continue to be visited almost 900 years after it was first built.

Today, visitors from all over the world come to learn about the fascinating and turbulent history of the Priory Church and to marvel at the magnificent Abergavenny Tapestry, which took a dedicated team of 60 ladies almost four years to complete. The exhibition is enhanced by displays of Tudor costumes and artefacts..

Entrance to the Tithe Barn exhibition is free, although a donation towards the upkeep of the building is welcomed.

The Tithe Barn also houses our Artist in Residence Jeremy Thomas who can usually be found in his studio, painting, from Monday to Saturday 11:00-15:00, when available.

In December 2017, it was announced that HM The Queen had agreed to the Courtyard outside the Tithe Barn being called the Prince of Wales Courtyard, in recogntion of His Royal Highness' long association with the site.

"Thank you all for an interesting and enjoyable second visit to the Tithe Barn and St Mary’s Priory. Liz Brown gave us a fascinating talk about the wall hangings. It was really good to add to our knowledge following Sir Trefor Morris’ guided tour last year." Thornbury U3A

"My WI enjoyed the talks given by both ladies regarding the wonderful tapestry... and were all enthralled by Sir Trefor's tour of the Church. As I went around the village today, I have only heard praises for the Tithe Barn. Everyone was delighted with such a wonderful meal and the friendly service provided by all members of staff." Ponthir WI

“Everyone enjoyed every part of the afternoon and were very impressed at the depth and knowledge of our guide and the beautiful way the Church is being kept and renovated."  Llangrove WI
